On December 25 sea Captain William Mynors, master of the East Indian Company vessel Royal Mary, spotted and named Christmas Island when he sailed past it in 1643. This collection of images features the remarkable surprises of this island which is full of natural wonders: from the unique annual red crab migration to rare and unusual birds, colourful marine life and beautiful beaches.
